With all the presents from Christmas and all the parties from New Year’s, your home may not be as clean as it was before, and a big cleanup is likely the last thing you want to do. You put in tons of work to make the holidays beautifully decorated and you just want to sit down and read that new book you got. But for those who are struggling to find a place for everything, here are some helpful tips to make the start of the New Year cleaner.
Replace, don’t add – All the new presents from Christmas need a place, but sometimes it’s hard to find room for more stuff. So don’t find room, replace! For each candle, toy, or trinket you get as a present, get rid of that old candle you thought you would use or that toy your child hasn’t played with more than once. This will help make you clean out and toss things you don’t really need or can’t use while making a place for the new things.
Don’t keep it if you won’t use it – You likely received a great gift or two that you’ll love for years, a few gifts that you really do want or need, and the ones you’ll keep for a month, never touch, and throw away when you forget who gave it to you. Skip that awkward stage and donate or toss the presents you know you will never or could never use as you do your post-holidays cleanup.
Take pictures and inventory – Do you already miss the beautiful lights on the tree or the nativity scene you set up? Take pictures! As for inventory, just slap a sticky note on the inside of the box with what decorations are stored in it so there’s less searching and more decorating next time.
Christmas cards – Don’t just toss the cards you’ve stocked up on. Make a fresh list of people who sent you cards so you are prepared for next season. If you really like a photo or graphic on one of the cards, cut it out and save the photos in an album with other family pictures, or attach a string to the graphic to use as a gift tag for next year.
