Those of us who have dogs or cats likely have to deal with a faint animal odor in our homes and fur all over half our clothes. We love our furry friends, but not so much their fur. So, here are some tips and tricks for keeping your home a little cleaner with pets.

Brush them daily – All you need is about five minutes per pet to brush your dog or cat. This gets rid of extra fur, spreads natural oils that improve their fur, and often feels great for your pet. Try to do this on a porch or patio so there’s no indoor cleanup, or, if your pet doesn’t mind, try using the vacuum hose on a lower setting to gently vacuum up the pet hair at the source.

Tape – There are products that can pick up pet hair from furniture and clothes, but they can sometimes lose their sticky-ness or cost a lot. All you need is tape, preferably duct tape. Tape is quick and easy, not too expensive, and can be disposed of with ease. You can also wrap duct tape – sticky side out – around a paint roller for a cheap and simple homemade tool, just add more tape as needed.

Doormats – Place some mats at any door your dog may use often to help keep your floors cleaner. Using a paper towel or a wipe to clean their feet when they come inside helps a lot too. Using towels on rainy or snowy days can help as well.

Baking soda – To reduce some of that pet smell, sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on carpeted areas, let sit, and vacuum.

Aluminum foil – If you’re tired of using a vacuum or roller to pick up pet hair from furniture, place aluminum foil anywhere your pet could sit on the couch or chair. The crinkly and noisy foil keeps them from getting comfortable where they aren’t allowed to be.

Litter box mat – For cat owners and some small dog owners, wherever the litter box is, there’s a litter mess. To help reduce this, put the litter box somewhere like a rarely used bathtub or put a litter mat under the box. Make sure the mat is plenty big enough that they have to walk on it when leaving the box.

By using these simple tricks, your home can be a little cleaner and your furry friend won’t be quite as much of a mess. Until next time – Happy Cleaning!!
