There is no avoiding what is happening with the coronavirus right now. Because of this, hygiene is a hot topic. Being proactive and taking simple measures can help reduce the spread of the coronavirus, as well as other illnesses. Deep cleaning your house and business and making sure all of the hard surfaces are cleaned on a regular basis is top priority. Also, take a few more proactive measures to keep it away from your family.
First let’s talk cleaning:
Don’t Just Clean, Disinfect
Just cleaning surfaces with a normal cleaning solution isn’t enough. You also need to make sure you are disinfecting as well. You want your disinfectant to be alcohol-based. If you don’t have an alcohol-based disinfectant, according to Dr Darshna Yagnik from Middlesex University, “use rubbing alcohol with a strength of at least 70%. Alternatively use household bleach containing sodium hypochlorite diluted in cold water. Both methods should kill viruses quite quickly by breaking down their cell walls.”
Focus on High Touch Surfaces
It’s easy to think if you just clean and disinfect the normal germ hotspots you will be fine. You need to think past that. Clean and disinfect all high touch surfaces. Think about what your families or employees touch the most. Clean door knobs, light switches, desks, tables, anything that is touched often, and clean it often.
Now let’s talk about being proactive:
Shared Devices
Whether at work or at home, if there are shared devices, you need to clean them often. It’s not a bad idea to clean between each use. Good Housekeeping shares the best way to do this, “To clean them, start by removing dust with a soft cloth. Then use a microfibre cloth sprayed lightly with water to wipe away grime, followed by a clean cloth spritzed with a disinfectant solution to get rid of germs and viruses. A cotton bud can be handy to clean the small areas between buttons.”
Precautions When You Get Home
When you first walk into your house, here are some precautions you should take:
- Take your shoes off. Shoes have the ability to bring in potential germs; don’t let that happen. Have a designated area right by your door to keep your shoes.
- Wash your hands. It’s better to be over cautious and wash your hands right away before you do anything else in your house. It’s not good enough to just use hand sanitizer. Wash your hands with soap and hot water.
Wash Your Hands Often
Yes, you have heard this from everyone right now, but we will just reiterate. You need to wash your hands often. Wash them after every restroom use and before you eat any meal. While hand sanitizer isn’t as effective as a good handwashing, use it when you can’t wash your hands, especially if you are in a public area.
It’s better to be proactive about your home and workplace to not only protect yourself but also your employees and fellow coworkers. Stay safe and stay healthy!
