Fall Cleaning Tips

Though Spring Cleaning is when most people have one big clean of their homes, your house needs to be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a year, and that means fall cleaning! This also means you’ll have a head start on holiday cleaning and the coming winter. That’s right, just clean your home the same way you would during spring! Read our two-part Spring Cleaning blog for tasks that you can now apply to your fall cleaning on top of these more specific tips.

Remove cobwebs – Autumn is spider season, and a warm, damp summer is the perfect condition for house spider breeding, so make sure to clean all corners of each room with an extendible duster or vacuum hose.

Check chimneys, wood burners, and carbon monoxide alarms – With the arrival of cold weather, we hide away in our homes in front of a roaring fireplace – or at least we crank the heat up. But a poorly maintained chimney or wood burner could cause a buildup of carbon monoxide. Have a professional clean your chimney or wood burner and make sure your carbon monoxide alarm is fully functioning.

Clean all of the bedding – Place all bed sheets and pillowcases in the laundry and flip and vacuum the mattress so everyone can sleep well during the winter.

Kitchen Clean-out – Go through all of the food in your kitchen and check expiration dates. If it’s past or will never get eaten in time, toss it!

Stock up – Though you are likely going to try to make more room by donating, you should utilize that extra space by ensuring you are prepared for winter. Make sure you have salt for the ice, shovels for the snow, and plenty of winter clothes!

Once you’ve finished your Spring Cleaning in the fall, you should be ready for the chill of winter and have a head start on the flood of guests you will receive for the holidays.
