It’s that time of year again when families gather for the holidays! As a continuation of last year’s Simple Holiday Cleaning blog, we’re going more in depth with some specific holiday cleaning tips. These handy tips can help prepare for Thanksgiving or Christmas parties ahead of time or can help you make a checklist of simple things for your children or spouse to handle while you deal with the tougher stuff!
Clean the refrigerator – And clean most things OUT! You will need as much room as possible for ingredients and leftovers. It may be one of those tough jobs, but don’t worry too much. If your fridge is too full, it will have to use more energy to keep its contents cold. You can do this a week or two in advance so you know that there will be plenty of room for Thanksgiving leftovers.
Wash special supplies – You know you have at least one dish set, pot, or some utensils that you never use outside of the holidays, so clean them now! They could have gotten a little messy or gathered some dust, so clean these rarely used things ahead of time. This is something you could have a spouse or child clean while you focus on other tasks like the fridge cleanout.
Set the table – If you can, setting the table the evening before the family arrives helps immensely. Not only does it make your dining room appear nicer, but also you won’t have to set it in the chaos of the family gathering. The spouse or children could help you complete this task faster.
Safe environment – With family members filling your home, it will be hard to keep track of the littlest children. Make sure to cover outlets, move choking hazards up, and block off parts of the house that you want untouched before guests arrive. It is best to keep this in mind as you clean and decorate so you aren’t rushing to take last second safety measures.
Trash duty – Both before and during the holiday get together, you will undoubtedly accumulate tons of trash. Instead of having to stop what you’re doing to take out another trash bag, have somebody on trash duty, whether it’s your spouse, a child, or some other family member. If they don’t have many tasks of their own to complete, put them in charge of making sure that the trash is always taken out.
If you keep these holiday cleaning tips in mind when preparing for Thanksgiving or Christmas, the chaos of the holidays may be a little less stressful and messy. Until next time, Happy Cleaning!
